P/Grigg-Skjellerup was observed to pass within 200 km of the line of sight to an anonymous faint star on the 1992 July 8 UT. The star's brightness was attenuated by 35% at closest approach by the comet. This result, combined with the faintness of the coma, suggests the presence of a dust jet in close proximity to, and emanating from, the nucleus of P/Grigg-Skjellerup similar to that observed in spacecraft images of the nuclear region of P/Halley.en_US
I would like to thank Mike Candy of the Perth Observatory and Merv Lynch at Curtin University for their help in organizing the observing run that resulted in these observations. Also Andrew Williams and Ralph Martin for their help with the observations. This work was supported by a Theodore Dunham, Jr. Grant from the Fund for Astrophysical Research, an NSF/NYS IUCRC grant for detector development work, and a travel grant from DITAC.en_US
