We study the behavior of coupled semiconductor lasers using a reduced phase model that captures their essential dynamics yet remains analytically tractable. We design a simple electronic circuit analog, a phaselocked loop, to investigate the system. The circuit offers important experimental advantages, since it operates with slower speeds than a comparable laser system, and has easily tunable parameters. This study reveals new and unexpected period-three states, which we also consider theoretically.en_US
