Experimental results are presented for the onset of nucleation, bubble growth, and heat transfer in subcooled flow boiling of water near atmospheric pressure. The theoretical analysis for nucleation criterion is extended by including the results of a numerical study to locate the stagnation streamline in the liquid flowing around the bubble. The results obtained from the analysis show a very good agreement with the experimental data and further validation with other fluids is suggested. The model by Bergles and Rohsenow (1964) provides the lower limit of wall superheat required for bubble nucleation. The bubble growth rates are also measured and are found to be different than those under pool boiling conditions.
