What characteristics distinguish learners who are deaf or hard of hearing from their hearing classmates? What factors or conditions increase a deaf person's access to school and employment? What factors contribute to a person's success at school and on the job? The goal of research at NTID is to answer these questions, and in this volume of the NTID Papers and Publications we are pleased to present summaries of recent research and descriptions of instructional materials produced by faculty and staff at NTID. I hope you will find them informative and useful, and I invite your comments, questions and suggestions regarding interpretation, application and follow-up research. We appreciated the strong support of Dr. Jeffrey Porter, Interim Director of the Center for Research, Teaching and Learning.
